Sick Fox

May 22- June 19

The Andrew Kreps Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Klaus Weber in New York. Klaus Weber has recently shown at the Cubitt space in London and presented a project commissioned by the Frieze Art Fair. This exhibition entitled "Sick Fox" consists of a video piece, a sound track written and sung by the artist, live crickets housed in structures hanging from the ceiling, as well as a suspended sculpture that intersects the space.

The show functions as an introduction into the artists' ideas. It elaborates on principles and methods that Weber has developed to work with the social imaginary and question the social and cultural constitution of the subject in relation to space.

The video "Menschenloop" documented an urban event that Weber staged in Los Angeles in which the artist orchestrated the collision of a car with a fire hydrant in a transit zone in L.A. and created a temporary public fountain entitled Fountain Loma Dr/W6tSt.a fire hydrant, two police officers, a late model car and a sidewalk. Shot with a hidden camera, the video observes the interaction between the fountain and pedestrians.

The soundtrack "kranke Fuchs", (sick fox), is emitted from two speakers stacked on each other with a turntable on top.  The lyrics, sung in German by the artist, refer to anti-humanist ideas of authority and free will. The song is intended to be a manual on "how to get rid of your self".

The installation is intersected by a suspended sculpture consisting of two black ropes that cross the space with a pair of shoes hanging off each rope. There are several hanging structures housing live crickets. Weber incorporated a high frequency sound into his soundtrack that stimulates the insects to perform as a chorus with the music. There is a video on view in the office in which the artist interviewed an urban geographer about transit zones in LA as well as full documentation of Fountain Loma Dr/W6tSt.a fire hydrant, two police officers, a late model car and a sidewalk.

The exhibition will be on view from May 22nd to June 19th 2004. A reception will be held for the artist in the gallery on May 22nd from 6-8 PM at 516 West 20th St., New York City. For information call 212-741-8849
